Etsy Digital Download Fees 2026: $5, $10 & $25 Math

Digital downloads avoid physical shipping, not Etsy seller fees. See the exact US fee stack for $5, $10, and $25 printables and templates before ads, taxes, and production costs.

Direct answer: The direct answer: in the supported US Etsy Payments model, a $5 digital download has $0.93 in core Etsy fees, a $10 download has $1.40, and a $25 template has $2.83. The stack is one $0.20 listing or renewal fee, a 6.5% transaction fee, and 3% + $0.25 payment processing, before Offsite Ads or taxes.

TL;DR

  • The direct answer: in the supported US Etsy Payments model, a $5 digital download has $0.93 in core Etsy fees, a $10 download has $1.40, and a $25 template has $2.83. The stack is one $0.20 listing or renewal fee, a 6.5% transaction fee, and 3% + $0.25 payment processing, before Offsite Ads or taxes.
  • The fixed fees matter most at low prices. Core fees consume 18.6% of a $5 printable, 14% of a $10 download, and about 11.3% of a $25 template. Raising price, bundling files, or limiting repeated renewals can matter more than removing a shipping cost that digital items do not have.
  • An attributed Offsite Ads order changes the answer sharply. At the 15% rate, total modeled fees become $1.68 on $5, $2.90 on $10, and $6.58 on $25. At the 12% rate, those totals are $1.53, $2.60, and $5.83. The ad fee applies only to attributed orders and is capped at $100 per order.
  • Etsy separates instant downloads from made-to-order digital files. Both still need the normal fee check. Digital VAT can increase the buyer checkout total in covered countries, while design labor, software, support, refunds, and advertising remain seller costs even when physical fulfillment is zero.

The Direct Etsy Digital Download Fee Answer

Etsy does not publish a separate lower seller-fee schedule for digital downloads. In the supported US Etsy Payments model, the core stack is the same $0.20 listing fee, 6.5% transaction fee, and 3% plus $0.25 payment processing used for other Etsy listings. The practical difference is normally zero physical shipping-label cost, not zero marketplace fees.

That produces $0.93 in core fees on a $5 printable, $1.40 on a $10 download, and $2.83 on a $25 template when buyer-paid shipping, item cost, ads, and tax are all set to zero. The modeled seller keeps $4.07, $8.60, or $22.17 before design time, software, customer support, refunds, and income tax.

Which Etsy Fees Apply to a Digital Download?

The first line is the $0.20 listing fee. Etsy says the fee is charged when a listing is created or renewed and that Etsy.com listings expire after four months. For a multi-quantity listing, another $0.20 renewal can be charged as sold quantity is replenished. Editing an existing listing does not create another listing fee.

The second line is the 6.5% transaction fee. In the no-shipping digital examples here, it applies to the displayed item price. Personalization charges and any shipping or gift-wrap amounts would expand the transaction-fee base if they were present.

The third line is Etsy Payments processing. Etsy lists the US rate as 3% plus $0.25 per order, assessed on the gross order amount including shipping and applicable tax. Processing rates vary by the location of the seller bank account, so non-US sellers should replace the US rate with the official country row.

$5, $10, and $25 Printable Fee Math

For a $5 printable, the model calculates $0.20 listing, $0.33 transaction, and $0.40 processing. Core fees total $0.93, leaving $4.07. Because $0.45 of the stack is fixed, the effective core fee rate is 18.6%.

For a $10 download, the model calculates $0.20 listing, $0.65 transaction, and $0.55 processing. Core fees total $1.40, leaving $8.60. The effective core fee rate falls to 14% because the two fixed fee components are spread across a larger order.

For a $25 template, the model calculates $0.20 listing, $1.63 transaction after cent rounding, and $1.00 processing. Core fees total $2.83, leaving $22.17. The effective core fee rate is about 11.3% before ads, taxes, refunds, or seller operating costs.

Why Listing Renewals Matter for Cheap Printables

A $0.20 fee looks small until the product price is small. On a $5 item it is 4% of revenue before transaction or processing fees. If a low-priced digital listing expires unsold and renews, that additional $0.20 is a real acquisition cost with no sale attached to absorb it.

Sold-quantity renewals also matter when a digital listing is configured with multiple quantity. Etsy says a listing can renew at $0.20 as quantity sells. Treat the modeled $0.20 as one listing-or-renewal event per sold unit, then separately track any unsold expiry renewals in shop overhead.

Bundles can reduce fixed-fee pressure because one $15 bundle pays one fixed processing charge and one listing event instead of three separate $5 orders. Bundling is not automatically better—the conversion rate, refund risk, support work, and buyer value must still justify the higher price—but the fee math becomes less punitive.

How Offsite Ads Change Digital Product Profit

Offsite Ads are a separate attributed-order fee, not part of the core $0.93, $1.40, or $2.83 totals. Etsy says eligible smaller shops pay 15% on attributed orders and may opt out, while shops that have reached $10,000 in any consecutive 365-day period receive the 12% rate and are required to participate for the lifetime of the shop.

At 15%, an attributed $5 order adds $0.75, bringing modeled fees to $1.68 and leaving $3.32 before seller costs. A $10 order adds $1.50, for $2.90 total fees. A $25 order adds $3.75, for $6.58 total fees.

At 12%, the same added ad fees are $0.60, $1.20, and $3.00, producing total modeled fees of $1.53, $2.60, and $5.83. Etsy caps the Offsite Ads fee at $100 per attributed order, but that cap does not affect these low-price examples.

Instant Download vs Made-to-Order Digital Files

Etsy separates digital items into instant downloads and made-to-order downloads. Instant-download files are uploaded with the listing and become available after purchase. Made-to-order files are completed for the buyer and uploaded when the order is ready.

The seller fee formula does not become cheaper merely because fulfillment is automated. Instant downloads remove packing and postage, but they can increase file-support, compatibility, and refund workload. Made-to-order files can carry more labor and revision time even though their shipping-label cost is still zero.

Etsy also says digital items must be made and/or designed by the seller and that digital listings cannot use variations. Product eligibility and listing configuration are separate from fee math, but both can change whether a low-price template is viable.

Digital VAT Is a Buyer Checkout Issue, Not Free Margin

Etsy says buyers in covered countries pay VAT on digital items and Etsy collects and remits that VAT. The buyer can therefore see a checkout total above the listing price even when the seller did not add physical shipping.

Do not add buyer VAT to seller profit. In the supported no-tax examples, the calculator isolates the item price and US seller fee stack. Etsy Payments processing can be assessed on applicable tax, so a real order can differ from the simplified row when tax is part of the processing base.

Tax rules and seller obligations vary by location. Use Etsy payment-account records and appropriate tax advice for filing; this guide is a fee-planning model, not tax advice.

How to Price a Digital Download After Fees

Start with the Etsy digital-download fee component page when you need a common-price table, then open the Etsy calculator with the actual price. Keep shipping at zero only when the order is genuinely digital, and add real item cost for licensed assets, contractor work, software allocation, or per-order support where those costs exist.

Next, model Offsite Ads separately. A $5 printable that works at $0.93 core fees may fail at $1.68 total fees on a 15% attributed order. Set a minimum profit floor for both organic and attributed orders instead of pricing from the organic case alone.

Finally, test the offer rather than only the percentage. A higher-priced template, a useful bundle, clearer file formats, fewer support requests, and controlled renewal settings can improve economics without pretending that digital fulfillment has no cost.

How to use this guide with the calculator

The guide explains the fee behavior that sellers usually forget. The calculator is where you should test the actual listing. Use the same sale price, shipping setup, and item cost you expect in real life so the article turns into a decision, not just background reading.

If the margin still looks close, compare the same sale against at least one other marketplace before you publish.

That keeps the guide tied to a real decision. The article gives you the context, but the calculator is where you confirm whether the listing still works under realistic price and shipping pressure.

Use the article context as the starting point, then test the price, shipping, and platform choice before you publish the listing.

FAQ

Quick Answers

How much are Etsy fees on a $5 digital download?
In the supported US no-shipping model, a $5 digital download has $0.93 in core Etsy fees: $0.20 listing, $0.33 transaction, and $0.40 payment processing. That leaves $4.07 before ads, taxes, refunds, and seller costs.
How much are Etsy fees on a $10 digital download?
A $10 digital download has $1.40 in modeled core fees: $0.20 listing, $0.65 transaction, and $0.55 US payment processing. The modeled payout is $8.60 before optional fees and seller costs.
How much are Etsy fees on a $25 template?
A $25 template has $2.83 in modeled core Etsy fees: $0.20 listing, $1.63 transaction, and $1.00 US payment processing. The modeled payout is $22.17 before Offsite Ads, taxes, refunds, and production costs.
Does Etsy charge $0.20 every time a digital download sells?
Etsy charges $0.20 to create or renew a listing. For multi-quantity listings, a sold quantity can trigger a $0.20 renewal. Expired listings can also renew for $0.20, while editing an existing listing does not create another listing fee.
Do Etsy Offsite Ads apply to digital products?
They can. When a digital-product order is attributed to an Offsite Ad, Etsy applies the seller's 15% or 12% rate to the order, subject to the $100 per-order cap. The fee is separate from listing, transaction, and processing fees.
Are Etsy digital downloads cheaper to sell than physical items?
They usually avoid physical shipping-label and packaging costs, but they use the normal Etsy seller fee stack in this model. Design labor, software, support, refunds, ads, and buyer-tax treatment can still make a cheap digital item unprofitable.
